Theodore Roosevelt Site-KC Kratt

History

Buffalo’s history is surprising and rich, replete with countless historic sites and museum-worthy stories. Battles were waged here as the War of 1812 played out at Old Fort Niagara. Fortunes were made by the likes of William G. Fargo, founder of American Express and Wells Fargo. Jazz legends like Louis Armstrong jammed at our Colored Musicians Club. And American presidents lived, died, governed and were buried here. In fact, on one fateful day in 1901, the world’s eyes were on Buffalo when President William McKinley died at the hands of an assassin and Teddy Roosevelt was inaugurated as our 26th president.

As part of a region occupied by the Seneca Indians for over 1,000 years, Buffalo originated as a small trading community in about 1789. It then grew quickly to become the quintessential 19th century boomtown, rising to industrial preeminence. The city’s position at the western terminus of the Erie Canal made us the “Gateway to the West”—the departure point for immigrants on their way to the heartland. Today this area has been newly revived at Canalside. Buffalo was also a gateway for runaway slaves seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad, then later fertile ground for the Civil Rights Movement.

From the Civil War graves at our historic Forest Lawn cemetery to the antique cars at the Buffalo Transportation Pierce-Arrow Museum to our nation’s largest inland floating history museum, the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park, Buffalo is home to the American experience. A trip to the Buffalo History Museum will get you started on your journey of discovery.

Buffalo’s rise, decline and resurgence has been influenced for generations by the contributions of African Americans. From the city’s trading-post origins through its time as a stop on the Underground Railroad, into the Civil War and through the days of Jim Crow to the Civil Rights movement, black Americans have played a crucial but often under-recognized part in the city’s history. The Buffalo Black Achievers Museum showcases those who helped build Buffalo – past, present and future.

A National Historic Landmark, the E. M. Cotter, is the oldest active fireboat in the world. It was built in Elizabeth, New Jersey and arrived in Buffalo November 6, 1900. Built and commissioned during an era when Buffalo’s waterfront and port were booming, the Cotter has been an invaluable asset of fire protection for the numerous warehouses, grain elevators and other facilities that line Buffalo’s shores. After 105 years the Cotter continues serving the citizens and properties of Greater Buffalo, more as a floating museum, visiting ports on Lakes Erie and Ontario. PLEASE NOTE: Tours of the boat are by appointment only, and must be pre-arranged.

Being in business 89 years, you have the tendency to accumulate things over time like family treasures and heirlooms. With the opening of the new facility, it was decided to add a museum at the end of the building. The museum is ever changing, and new motorcycles are being added. It truly is an evolution.

Many people today have classic and rare motorcycles but choose not to go through the effort of showing them. The Buffalo Harley-Davidson® Museum is the perfect outlet. There are over 35 motorcycles on display, including a 1917 Model J, 1934 VLD, 1941 Knucklehead and more.

Many people look at the Buffalo Irish Center through the eyes of one of its many organizations that meet there. That is simply seeing Ireland as a green island instead of the ’40 shades of green’ that weave together the intricate tapestry of different elements that bind and define our culture and heritage.

The Buffalo Irish Center is much more than a meeting place in a pub, a bingo hall, or an establishment for little girls to learn dancing. The Center has grown to become home to over a dozen non-profit Irish-American organizations each promoting a different aspect of its culture. Collectively, the Buffalo Irish Center has become one of the richest cultural and ethnic centers in Western New York.

For everything from weddings to fundraisers and anything in between, air-conditioned hall rentals are available with catering optional. The beautiful wainscoted décor of the Claddagh Room would set off any event for up to 120 seated people. The larger Emerald Room can seat 270 people.

Inside the Buffalo Irish Center is the GAAA Irish Library. This library was originally formed to house a collection of books donated by Mr. Roy Phelps of Niagara Falls. Through the years, it has evolved into a unique ethnic library in Western New York, one of a kind.

It is the mission of the Buffalo Maritime Center to provide everyone the opportunity to experience the joy of being on the water, to learn maritime history, and to achieve higher levels of craftsmanship. Through collecting, preserving, and interpreting maritime artifacts, we share our passion for traditional skills, experiential learning, and the rich maritime culture of the Niagara Frontier.

At present, the 28,000 square foot facility at 90 Arthur Street in Riverside provides educational programs, like the Hand-to-Hand Student Boat Building Program, a working boat shop, a bronze foundry, a metal shop and a library, exhibit space and archives all dedicated to the maritime material culture and history.

The Buffalo Maritime Center is also constructing a traditionally built, full-sized reproduction of the Erie Canal Boat “Seneca Chief,” to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Erie Canal happening in 2025. The boat is being built in full public view at the Longshed Building at Canalside with volunteers.

Buffalo’s legacy as one of our nation’s most important transportation and industrial centers rose from our impressive waterfront. No visit to the Queen City would be complete without a trip to our shores.

Canalside is the jewel in our crown. The result of over $300 million in new development, Canalside hosts over 1,000 annual events. Every summer, outdoor yoga, children’s games and Thursday at Canalside concerts take place along the district’s Central Wharf.

Each winter, throngs of visitors flock to the Ice at Canalside, a 35,000 square foot rink on the recreated Erie Canal that features, skating, curling, pond hockey and ice bikes. Across the street, LECOM Harborcenter attracts hockey players from around the world by hosting amateur and college tournaments at its two NHL sized rinks. And sports and food fanatics are flocking to the two-story (716) Food & Sport that features over 70 televisions, including a 38-foot tall screen for the big games.

Our waterfront is also home to America’s largest inland Naval park, the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park. The Erie Basin Marina features an observation tower with breathtaking views of Buffalo and Canada. The historic Buffalo Lighthouse welcomes you to the Buffalo River. And the nearby Outer Harbor features miles of bike trails and lakefront parks. If you like fishing, the bass, salmon and trout are biting throughout our inner and outer harbors. Rent a kayak or waterbike or take a cruise aboard the Queen City Ferry, the Spirit of Buffalo or Buffalo Harbor Cruises to see it all!

The Colored Musicians Club is the only remaining African American club of its kind in the United States. In 1999, it was designated a historical preservation site. In 2018, it was designated as a National Historic Site. Currently, the Club is promoting historical research and the preservation of jazz in Buffalo. Members offer free jazz lessons to community youth, and hold a jam session at the club on Sunday evenings. Giants of jazz like Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis once played at the city’s Colored Musicians Club. It continues to operate as a club and a jazz history museum.

Founded in 1859, Concordia is the final resting place for over 21,000 residents of Western New York. There are over 500 war veterans, 150 of whom are Civil War Soldiers, including members of the famous Wiedrich’s Battalion First Light Infantry. Medal of Honor recipient John McHugh is also laid to rest at Concordia)

With over 15 acres, Concordia Cemetery has long been part of Western New York’s history. In 2008, it was added to the New York State Register of Historic Sites and the National Register of Historic Places, cited as a significant historic property because of its representation of Buffalo’s early German immigrant population and its collection of grave monuments of the period. It originally was created to be the burial ground shared by three German evangelical churches. The term “Concordia” means harmony and refers to the coming-together of the three churches.

Concordia is cared for by volunteers. Please call before visiting for additional information.

Echoes Through Time Learning Center & Civil War Museum is the ONLY civil war museum in Western New York and the ONLY museum in New York State, totally dedicated to the history of the American civil war era.

This is an educational “hands on” Civil War museum. We use our collection in many of our programs, demonstrations and tours.

The Learning Center is involved in a variety of educational studies; programs; demonstrations and interpreting. This is a place for: learning, research & history… But the Learning Center is not your traditional museum type of setting.

In our collection is a wide variety of weapons, uniforms & equipment, covering all the major services and supporting services.

We host monthly lectures; do historical research, and give historical/battlefield tours. A great experience for Church groups, Scout troops, Veteran organizations and Schools.

Certified as a Civil War Museum, Chartered by the New York State Board of Regents.

As one of the first deliberately designed and professionally landscaped rural cemeteries in the United States, Forest Lawn’s first interment took place in 1850. Today there are 162,000+ permanent residents in this 269-acre, not-for-profit cemetery serving all faiths. Listed on the State and National Registries of Historic Places, Forest Lawn is also at the heart of Western New York’s cultural tourism renaissance. Each year, it plays host to thousands of visitors who come to enjoy all that Forest Lawn has to offer: unmatched natural beauty – hills, valleys, lakes and streams; sculptural masterpieces (including the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Blue Sky Mausoleum); living history.

Most importantly, the stories of those who now rest in peace under Forest Lawn’s care – from a U.S. President and foreign royalty, to captains of industry, artists, inventors, veterans from every U.S. conflict since the Revolutionary War and people like us who have quietly built the community that we and our families enjoy — each has a story to be told through the expansive archives and genealogical resources of the Margaret L. Wendt Archive and Resource Center and through Forest Lawn’s award-winning tours, concerts, lectures and special events.

Forest Lawn, in addition to being a magnificent cemetery, is Buffalo Niagara’s largest arboretum. Its 269 acres are filled with undulated landscape, abundant wildlife and beautiful art and architecture. The original landscape was designed in 1849 by noted cemetery landscape architects Adolph Strauch and Joseph Earnshaw. There are many gardens to view, including the Gratitude Garden in front of the Rosewood Mausoleum, a meditation garden in front of the historic chapel and, of course, the many individual gardens that families maintain.

The Freedom Wall was created by John Baker, Julia Bottoms-Douglas, Chuck Tingley, and Edreys Wajed in 2017.

The Buffalo AKG Public Art Initiative, in collaboration with the Michigan Street African-American Heritage Corridor and neighborhood stakeholders, envisioned this mural as a way to celebrate our nation’s historic and ongoing struggles for political and social equality, including the formative and lasting contributions of local leaders to this cause. With support from the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA), the large concrete wall surrounding the NFTA’s Cold Spring Bus Maintenance Depot has been transformed into portraits of twenty-eight notable civil rights leaders from America’s past and present.

[description] =>

Lafayette Square (formerly Court House Park or Courthouse Square) is a park in the center of downtown Buffalo, Erie County, New York, United States that hosts a Civil War monument. The block, which was once square, is lined by many of the city’s tallest buildings. The square was named for General Lafayette, who visited Buffalo in 1825.

The square was part of the original urban plan for the city as laid out by Joseph Ellicott in 1804. Its eastern edge has long been defined by important civic structures; first, the Erie County Courthouse, followed by the original Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. Presidential history was made in Lafayette Square when former United States President Martin Van Buren received the Free Soil Party nomination for the 1848 election. President-elect Abraham Lincoln also spoke at the square.

Today, the square offers a clear view of Buffalo City Hall, an Art Deco building three blocks to the west. A granite Civil War monument, titled Soldiers and Sailors, gives a strong vertical and ceremonial definition to the space. Conceived by Mrs. Horatio Seymour, the monument’s dedication ceremony was attended by Grover Cleveland and other prominent figures

The Larkin Gallery is located in, and funded by, the Larkin Center of Commerce. The exciting new gallery focuses on the history of the Larkin Soap Co., founded in 1874.

The Larkin Gallery received items from several noted collectors including Mary Larkin, the great granddaughter of John D. Larkin Sr. Art Professor Jerome Mead contributed two pencil drawings by company artist Alex O. Levy (1881-1947.) Larkin history enthusiast Sharon Osgood contributed an original journal of interoffice memos covering the period from 1899 to 1902. The memos are full of fascinating insights into the day to day life at the Larkin Soap Company, as well as references to what is believed to be the first company coffee break in America. Jerome Puma provided several unique items including what he refers to as “the first infomercial,” a silent movie of a family making and receiving an order, and live action factory shots of the manufacturing process.

The opening of the Larkin Gallery also created an opportunity for Peg Meisenbach to fulfill the wishes of her late mother, Raeanne Roy, a longtime collector of Larkin related objects. Peg provided her mother’s entire collection as it was Raeanne’s wish that it be ‘donated to a Larkin Museum.’

The Archives Department of the Buffalo History Museum contributed three film strips from the early 1920’s which were intended to be tutorial and motivational to the Larkin Secretaries of Ten, who organized clubs around the country to sell products and earn premiums. It also provided old photos and a huge portrait of John D. Larkin, Sr. The portrait now proudly oversee’s the 701 Seneca lobby.

The gallery mainly operates just off the 701 Seneca lobby, but also meanders past the incredible Larkin Center photos on display leading to the American flag which once flew over the Frank Lloyd Wright, Larkin Administration Building. The flag, which flew from 1907-1909, was donated by way Melissa Crowell (great-great granddaughter of John D. Larkin, Sr., founder of the Larkin Soap Company).

Private tours available by appointment.

An interesting, guided historical tour through America’s past. You will explore the historic Erie Canal Locks 67-71 constructed in 1838, view ruins from an early industrial age, and your guide will rock in the mid-1800’s, viewing stalactites, flowstone and other geological formations. You will also see artifacts left behind by the men who build the tunnel in the early days of the Erie Canal. Then you will ride in an underground boat. Visitors are awestruck as they take a ride that has been described as both “peaceful and eerie” as the boat glides through lifeless waters, illuminated only by small, sporadically placed electric lights.

It serves as a collection of indoor shops and office space and is the best surviving example of such a retail complex within the city. The Market Arcade re-opened in 1995 after a $10 million renovation featuring terra cotta, Corinthian columns and elaborate ornamentation. It is a stunning example of architecture in Downtown Buffalo. Today it features a number of local independently owned retailers, a gym, a barber shop, art galleries, food hall and more.

The Michigan Street Baptist Church has been a central part of the history and culture of the African American community in Buffalo for more than 150 years. It is one of the oldest properties in Buffalo continuously operated by African Americans. The building was erected in 1845 and became a legendary Underground Railroad station, providing sanctuary for hundreds of freedom seekers before they crossed the border to freedom in Canada. It was a central meeting place for abolitionists and anti-lynching activists. Over the years, Frederick Douglass, William Wells Brown, W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington each graced its sanctuary.

Niagara Square is a public square located at the intersections of Delaware Avenue, Court Street, Genesee Street, and Niagara Street in Buffalo, New York. It is the central hub of Joseph Ellicott’s original radial street pattern that he designed in 1804 for the then village of New Amsterdam. It continues to be the nexus of downtown Buffalo.

Its origins date back to the conclusion of the French and Indian War in 1763, which ended French domination of the Niagara Frontier and marked the advent of permanent settlement of the area. This trend increased after the Revolution, and in 1804 Joseph Ellicott (1760–1826) mapped a town on the banks of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Buffalo Creek. The site of the city was part of the vast land holdings of the Holland Land Company, a Dutch firm that had purchased most of western New York. Ellicott, who was the local Holland Land Company agent, had earlier in his career helped his brother Andrew survey Pierre L’Enfant’s plan for the new capital at Washington.

Within the center of the modern square is a large monument commemorating the assassination of President McKinley, who was assassinated in Buffalo during the Pan-American Exposition of 1901.

One of Western New York’s most exquisite landmarks, Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica attracts visitors worldwide. Rivaling the great churches of Europe, the Basilica was built in 1926 as a gift of thanks to the Blessed Mother from Venerable Nelson Baker, a current candidate for sainthood whose final resting place is located within the church. Prominent features of the shrine include breathtaking painting and marble sculpture, as well as the Father Baker Museum and OLV Gift Shop located in the lower level. Public tours are offered Sundays at 1:00 p.m. or by calling Denise Wood, Director of Programs at (716) 828-7517.

The Van Horn Mansion was built by Judge James Van Horn in 1823. It is the site of the Town of Newfane’s first town meeting, April 6, 1824. The name for the Town of Newfane is believed to be chosen by the town Postmaster. The Mansion includes 16 rooms and five bathrooms.

Perhaps the largest 5 & 10 in the world, Vidler’s is much more than a store – they’re shopping entertainment at its best! Relax and enjoy a trip back in time as you stroll through their amazing five and dime! Owned and operated by the Vidler family since opening in 1930, the third generation now manages the store on a daily basis.

It’s hard to describe, but impossible to forget with over 75,000 different items spread out over 2 floors in four connected buildings. You can spend hours wandering through the store and seeing the counters and shelves overflowing with the practical, unique, whimsical and sometimes, stuff you (and we) have never even seen before!

The true Vidler’s shopping experience is not just their incredible selection of merchandise, but the historic buildings, wooden floors, old-fashioned candy counter, 10¢ popcorn machine and nostalgic atmosphere that can’t be duplicated. Located on East Aurora’s historic upper Main Street, there are numerous restaurants and other local attractions within easy walking distance from our store.

The West Seneca Historical Society was founded in 1946 with Phillip Wiegand as its first president. When you enter the Museum, you are standing in an original Lower Ebenezer Society House, built around 1850. You may find it interesting that there were no kitchens in Ebenezer homes, and that is because meals were cooked by the women and girls in a communal kitchen house, scattered throughout the community.

Today’s Museum reflects many periods in the history and growth of West Seneca. Artifacts in the collection include items from the Seneca and other Indian cultures who once lived in the area.
