Best Things to Do in Winter

Buffalo owns winter.   The region embraces living in a winter wonderland filled with skiing, pond hockey, ice skating, tubing, sledding, snowshoeing and ice fishing options.

Lake effect snows mean the slopes at Kissing Bridge and Holiday Valley are always ripe for schussing. For cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, you won’t find better or more awe-inspiring trails. The Beaver Meadow Audubon Center (about 45 minutes away) offers snowshoe rentals and public access to an 8-mile network of scenic trails across the 324-acre preserve. Closer to home, Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora, Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park and the Tifft Nature Preserve on the Buffalo waterfront deliver spectacular vistas along popular trails; Chestnut Ridge also has toboggan chutes and one of the most impressive sled hills in the region!

Buffalo’s waterfront has turned into a year round attraction with an outdoor skating rink at Canalside four times the size of Rockefeller Center’s. Further up the Buffalo River, Riverworks is becoming a winter hotspot with weekly curling lessons and pond hockey tournaments. On the other side of downtown, Rotary Rink is a local favorite for free skating and inexpensive rentals.

An oasis within the industrial landscape that once defined the city, Buffalo RiverWorks might best be known as the place with the massive grain elevators painted to resemble a six-pack of beer visible from cruising altitude. But RiverWorks, in a relatively short period of time, has become much, much more . One of Buffalo’s remarkable examples of adaptive reuse, RiverWorks is constructed in the footprint and ruins of the former GLF grain silos, a reminder of Buffalo’s strong industrial heritage. This brewery, restaurant, sports, leisure, adventure and entertainment complex has become a one-of-a-kind destination along Buffalo’s waterfront.

The question isn’t what can you do at Buffalo RiverWorks, it’s what CAN’T you do. If you’re scoping out a breezy place to relax along the Buffalo River, the RiverWorks brewery and beer garden are calling your name. Looking to get on the water? Rent a kayak, stand up paddleboard and hop on the Buffalo CycleBoat or Buffalo Tiki Tour. Seeking heart-pumping adventure? Put your rock climbing skills to the test as you scale the sheer walls of the grain silos. Catch a action-packed roller derby bout, jam out to a concert or enjoy one of the events happening nearly every weekend at RiverWorks.

NEW this year is the addition of the Buffal-O ferris wheel!

This brewery, restaurant, sports, leisure, adventure and entertainment complex has become a one-of-a-kind destination along Buffalo’s waterfront featuring fun throughout summer and winter including ziplining, rock climbing, roller derby, ice skating, curling and more!

At 350 acres, Delaware Park was the largest of the three original parks and was a landscape that Olmsted and Vaux called a “country park”.

Although today’s park still offers much in the way of original features, many others have yet to be restored. These include Spire Head House (an exotic gazebo designed by Vaux), a quarry garden, bridle paths, and pedestrian pathways.

Delaware Park can also host Baseball, Basketball, Golf, and Tennis.

One of the first Frederick Law Olmsted-designed parks in Buffalo, the 350 acres of meadow, forest and lake serve as Buffalo’s “Central Park” featuring boating on Hoyt Lake by the Marcy Casino, Rose Garden, Japanese Gardens, and a golf course, and newly added horse-drawn carriage rides (Sunday only from 1pm – 5pm.) As the focal point of the Olmsted System, it contains many popular cultural institutions.

Olmsted had predicted that Delaware Park was destined to take a “distinguished position among the parks of the world.” Known as many Buffalonians’ favorite Olmsted park, it is also nationally recognized.

In Summer, hike through the self-guided mapped nature trail or walk through the lush greenery along Cazenovia Creek. Plan a picnic and grill at our spacious shelters. Kids love the playground area or play ball at our diamonds. Bicycle by the paved winding roads. Experience free downhill skiing all winter long and snowboard at our new snowboarding slope. Warm up to the cozy fireplaces at the ski lodge after the 2-mile X-country skiing run or snowshoeing through the trails. Snowmobile trails are marked. The Judge Strohrer’s Lodge offers a lighted natural ice skating rink.

Buffalo’s newest Canalside attraction, Ice Bikes of Buffalo, a division of Water Bikes of Buffalo LLC, combines the activity of riding a bike along with the ability to perform this feat while on the surface of the ice. Ice Bikes of Buffalo will give you a way to participate on the ice if you are not the best on ice skates. This stable unit allows you to pedal and steer your way around the rink in the same manner as you would if you were going for a traditional bike ride.

Please note: Ice Bikes are seasonal. Please visit the website for operating schedule.
