Buffalo’s legacy as one of our nation’s most important transportation and industrial centers rose from our impressive waterfront. No visit to the Queen City would be complete without a trip to our shores.
Canalside is the jewel in our crown. The result of over $300 million in new development, Canalside hosts over 1,000 annual events. Every summer, outdoor yoga, children’s games and Thursday at Canalside concerts take place along the district’s Central Wharf.
Each winter, throngs of visitors flock to the Ice at Canalside, a 35,000 square foot rink on the recreated Erie Canal that features, skating, curling, pond hockey and ice bikes. Across the street, LECOM Harborcenter attracts hockey players from around the world by hosting amateur and college tournaments at its two NHL sized rinks. And sports and food fanatics are flocking to the two-story Southern Tier Brewery that features over 70 televisions, including a 38-foot tall screen for the big games.
Our waterfront is also home to America’s largest inland Naval park, the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park. The Erie Basin Marina features an observation tower with breathtaking views of Buffalo and Canada. The historic Buffalo Lighthouse welcomes you to the Buffalo River. And the nearby Outer Harbor features miles of bike trails and lakefront parks. If you like fishing, the bass, salmon and trout are biting throughout our inner and outer harbors. Rent a kayak or waterbike or take a cruise aboard the Queen City Ferry, the Spirit of Buffalo or Buffalo Harbor Cruises to see it all!

At 350 acres, Delaware Park was the largest of the three original parks and was a landscape that Olmsted and Vaux called a “country park”.
Although today’s park still offers much in the way of original features, many others have yet to be restored. These include Spire Head House (an exotic gazebo designed by Vaux), a quarry garden, bridle paths, and pedestrian pathways.
Delaware Park can also host Baseball, Basketball, Golf, and Tennis.
One of the first Frederick Law Olmsted-designed parks in Buffalo, the 350 acres of meadow, forest and lake serve as Buffalo’s “Central Park” featuring boating on Hoyt Lake by the Marcy Casino, Rose Garden, Japanese Gardens, and a golf course, and newly added horse-drawn carriage rides (Sunday only from 1pm – 5pm.) As the focal point of the Olmsted System, it contains many popular cultural institutions.
Olmsted had predicted that Delaware Park was destined to take a “distinguished position among the parks of the world.” Known as many Buffalonians’ favorite Olmsted park, it is also nationally recognized.

Operating cutting-edge all-electric, zero-emission vessels out of Niagara Falls, N.Y., U.S.A., the world famous Maid of the Mist provides guests with an electric experience as their e-boats cruise right to the base of the American Falls, then onto the magnificent Horseshoe Falls. It’s a fantastic voyage through the thundering falls surrounded by massive rock formations that have tamed the raging rapids for millions of years. It is an unforgettable 25-minute experience of a lifetime. The Maid of the Mist Observation Deck offers a dramatic view of Niagara Falls, extending past the Lower Niagara Gorge for an unobstructed view of the Niagara River. Elevators descend to the Maid of the Mist boat dock landing.

Ralph Wilson Park is Buffalo’s largest waterfront park located at the junction of Lake Erie and the mouth of the Niagara River. Formerly LaSalle Park, this $110 million redesign and development was inspired by Imagine LaSalle, a multi-year, community-driven initiative that, once complete, will be full of innovative and creative play spaces – some of which include a massive freighter ship, huge bird-shaped jungle gym, splash pad, and community pool.
Kids will also have access to sports fields including baseball and softball diamonds, soccer and football fields. There is plenty of space for outdoor games, a fishing lagoon and kayak launch.

Wilson-Tuscarora State Park is a well-preserved natural area for many varieties of plants and wildlife, encompassing 476.5 acres of mature woods, open meadows and marshland. Tuscarora Bay, divided from Lake Ontario by a strip of land called “The Island,” has a boat launch and emergency storm shelter docks. The park’s four-mile nature trail is also used for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Fishing for many varieties of pan fish and game fish, from boats or from shore, is extremely popular. Picnickers can enjoy scenic views of the lake while children play in the playground.

For those who want to experience Western New York’s hidden gem, white water rafting on the mighty Cattaraugus, through Zoar Valley, is the perfect springtime activity. You’ll view rugged cliffs hundreds of feet high, waterfalls (both free falling and hidden by old growth stands of oak, hemlock and tulip), nesting bald eagles, and you’ll experience the finest white water west of the Adirondacks.
The season runs from Mid-March through May and the ten mile trip takes approximately 2 to 4 hours to complete. For those who might want a milder version, a 6 mile run on the lower section of the river, is available.
