The Town of Amherst is named after Sir Jeffrey Amherst, an English lord who was Commander-in-Chief of the British troops in America, the town government was formed in 1819.

Today, the town has a geographical area of 53.6 square miles and a population of more than 122,000 people, making their home in the village of Williamsville, as well as the hamlets of Eggertsville, Getzville, Snyder, Swormville and East Amherst. Amherst is also home to SUNY University at Buffalo North Campus, Daemen College, and Erie Community College North Campus.
