Cave of the Winds

Soak up the experience of being closer to the waters of Niagara Falls than you thought possible, on a spectacular Niagara Falls tour. Your journey begins with an elevator ride 175 feet into the Niagara Gorge. Then, clad in a souvenir rain poncho and sandals, you'll follow a tour guide over wooden walkways to the Hurricane Deck, less than 20 feet from the torrents of Bridal Veil Falls. On the deck, you'll experience tropical storm-like conditions, getting doused with the spray from the rushing waters. A special Cave of the Winds viewing area has also been set up for handicapped individuals and adults with children in arms.

FESTIVAL THEATER

Learn the fascinating history of Niagara Falls through a History Channel film produced specifically for the Festival Theater. "Niagara: A History of the Falls," is a 22-minute film featuring highlights from a two-hour documentary produced by the History Channel in 1999. The film takes viewers from the first sighting of Niagara Falls in 1697, to modern events, such as the time the American Falls were artificially dewatered in 1969. FORT NIAGARA STATE PARK

Fort Niagara State Park has two boat launches providing access to the lower Niagara River and Lake Ontario, a fish cleaning station, woodland hiking trails, 3 swimming pools, a waterslide, view of Lake Ontario, picnic grounds, playgrounds, water fowl hunting and 18 soccer fields. FOURMILE CREEK STATE PARK

Four Mile Creek State Park is located just 15 minutes north of the mighty Niagara Falls. The 275 campsites average 50' x 50' in size and feature both shady and sunny settings. Available services range from 10 50 amp sites and 121 30 amp sites to 144 non-electric sites accommodating the biggest rig to the most primitive tent site. 21 prime sites, electric or non-electric, are located near the shores of Lake Ontario and offer spectacular panoramic views. The park has hiking trails for campers along the densely wooded bluffs. The marsh at the mouth of Four Mile Creek is home to fauna such as great blue herons, white tail deer and to flora such as stunning white trillium and greenbrier. A camp store is located at Four Mile Creek. Laundry facilities are located at comfort stations in the 100 and 200 areas. A modern playground is centrally located in the park. Seasonal.

FREEDOM CROSSING: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD IN GREATER NIAGARA

The dramatic and heart-rending stories of the people who risked their lives for freedom, as well as the lasting heritage of their ancestors, can now be experienced at Freedom Crossing, the new Regional Underground Railroad Interpretive Center, on the campus of Niagara University in nearby Lewiston. Freedom crossing tells the story of the Underground Railroad in Buffalo Niagara through historic photographs, artifacts, stories, audio stations, and art. JOSEPH DAVIS STATE PARK

Joseph Davis State Park has a variety of recreational activities. The terrain is generally flat, with fields, woodlands and ponds. Anglers can fish for largemouth bass in the pond near the park entrance or for a variety of freshwater fish from the fishing dock on the lower Niagara River. The park also has a nature trail, as well as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling trails and a 27-hole frisbee disc golf course. Park is open year round. Small game hunting is permitted only during pheasant season, water fowl hunting with permit only during season.

NIAGARA RESERVATION STATE PARK

Niagara Reservation State Park, which surrounds mighty Niagara Falls, is the oldest state park in the United States. The park is made up of numerous islands, as well as the famous Prospect Point area. The magnificent Great Lakes Garden greets visitors entering the park. The visitor center offers information and exhibits about the park's history, geology and technology. The Niagara Scenic Trolley provides three-mile guided tours, stopping at the park's most scenic vistas and at such facilities as the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center, which tells the story of the creation of the falls with exhibits and a multiscreen theater presentation. The Observation Tower has elevators that take visitors 180 feet down to the base of the tower for a close-up view of the American Falls. WHIRLPOOL STATE PARK

Whirlpool State Park has two levels - the upper, or street level has many overlooks with spectacular views of the swirling waters of the rapids, the whirlpool and the Niagara River Escarpment. Visitors picnic and children use the playground at this level. The lower, or river level is accessible by walking the 300 feet of trails and steps that descend into the gorge.
