The main event takes place behind the classical façade of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Here you’ll find one of the finest collections of modern and contemporary art anywhere in the world, what Thomas Hoving, former Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, has called “an overwhelming art experience.” After you’ve had your fill of art, enjoy a refreshing repast at muse, the new, re-designed dining space within the Gallery, and the view of the always-striking sculpture garden.

BURCHFIELD PENNEY ART CENTER video

Across the street you’ll find the newly-constructed Burchfield Penney Art Center, a gallery devoted to the work of visionary water-colorist Charles Burchfield and other regional artists, on the campus of Buffalo State College. Burchfield made his home in the hamlet of Gardenville and his scenes depicting local landscapes resonate with a deeply felt pride of place. The new 84,000 square-foot art center is the first art museum built in Buffalo in over a century and features 7,500 works by more than 600 artists.

But Buffalo’s art scene doesn’t end there. Nearby, you can visit artists at work in a former windshield wiper factory at the Buffalo Arts Studio. Potters, painters and photographers all call the Studio home and a walk through its spacious hallways can be a provocative introduction to new directions in contemporary art.

Art icons Cindy Sherman and Robert Longo helped to found the legendary Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center while students in Buffalo in the mid-70s. Today, the gallery has moved to an exciting new space in Babeville (formerly the Church) in downtown Buffalo and continues to push the envelope of style and subject matter.

CEPA Gallery in the historic Market Arcade nurtures the next generation of photographers who are exploring the boundaries of their chosen medium in both digital and traditional formats, as well as in video and film. You can also explore thought- provoking installations at Big Orbit Gallery on the city’s West Side or take in an engaging series of exhibits at the University at Buffalo’s Art Galleries on the college’s North Campus in nearby Amherst and at the Anderson Gallery in North Buffalo, an adaptive reuse of a former elementary school of real imagination and charm.

Behind Buffalo’s blue-collar image, lies an arts destination of the first rank.

ARTSPACE

Artspace Buffalo Lofts opened in July of 2007 to provide affordable housing and work space for artists and their families, and commercial space for arts organizations and arts-related businesses. The City of Buffalo engaged Artspace projects, Inc. to develop this new live/work project in the historic Breitweiser Printing Building on Main Street in Buffalo's Midtown neighborhood. The project consists of 60 live/work units: 36 in the Breitweiser plus 2 in new construction behind it. In addition, 9,000 square feet of commercial space on the street level of the Breitweiser Building provide offices and other space for arts organizations and arts-related businesses.

Carvings for a Cause

Visit over 30 life-size wood sculptures on the Carvings for a Cause Art Trail. In October 2006, the City of Buffalo was hit by a freak snowstorm that toppled thousands of historic trees. A community revitalization effort transformed the trunks into 8' ft tall works of art that pay tribute to numerous Buffalonians and symbols.
