On their never-ending culinary quest, Eat Sip Trip, part of USA TODAY 10Best, got the charbroiled skinny on Buffalo-style hot dogs in this recent article.
“There is no iconic ‘Buffalo hot dog’ – no specific combination of ingredients that define the frankfurters from this city, such as Arizona’s bacon-wrapped Sonoran hot dog or Chicago’s poppy-seed bunned and condiment-laden dogs; rather, Buffalo simply has an abundance of great franks,” contributor Larissa Milne explains. “No matter how you slice it, Buffalo is a hot dog town that’s ready for prime time. From smoky char-grilled dogs that are reminiscent of family cookouts, to sublime griddled Texas Hots, Buffalonians know how to roll.”
The toppings may vary, from the works at Louie’s to Texas Hot sauce at Louie’s Texas Red Hots and half chili, half cheese, and house-made hot relish at Ted’s. But one thing remains constant: a char-grilled, Buffalo-born Sahlen’s hot dog. And while Ted’s, Louie’s and Louie’s Texas Red Hots shine in this article, we’d be remiss in not mentioning the other top dogs like Connor’s, George’s, Taffy’s, Red Top, Mississippi Mudd’s, Old Man River, and new all-stars like Frank Gourmet Hot Dogs.
