Old First Ward Blue-Collar Buffalo

Explore the Ward

One of Buffalo’s oldest neighborhoods has become one of its hippest neighborhoods. Built close to the Buffalo River and the dockside jobs it once promised, the Old First Ward has been reinvigorated in recent years by kayak launch sites, new breweries, a cool coffee shop, seasonal pop-up dining, a rowing club, bike paths and a climbing gym. Despite this infusion of entrepreneurial activity, the Ward remains true to its blue-collar roots and home to some of the city’s oldest corner taverns where you can always find a cold one and friendly conversation.

At a Glance

A walk through one of Buffalo’s many neighborhoods can be stimulating, entertaining and a chance to see how the locals live. For most travelers, shopping is near the top of the list of things to do while away from home, and everyone is always looking for the next spot to relax and re-energize after getting in some serious steps. With that in mind, here are some suggestions about where to sip, shop and savor while in the BUF.

Sip

Adolf’s Old First Ward Tavern

Founded in 1934 and reopened in 2014, this Old First Ward tavern brings the pub atmosphere and neighborhood bar back to the Ward, and offers local brews and an expanded menu of handmade plates and tavern specialties.

Lakeward Spirits

Finding home in a repurposed century-old barrel factory, Lakeward Spirits not only has incredible cocktails and drink options, but hosts an incredible event space, too.

Hartman’s Distilling

Ask about the barrel room at Hartman’s. This secret spot gives you the chance to enjoy your craft cocktail in a hidden speakeasy. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are encouraged.

Shop

Elevator Alley Kayak

Given the Ward’s proximity to the Buffalo River, gear up for adventure with kayaks, vests, paddles, dry-bags and more at this outdoor supply shop.

Savor

Gene McCarthy’s

Nestled among grain elevators, multi-family homes and a network of railroad tracks in Buffalo’s First Ward, McCarthy’s is a classic neighborhood tavern that attracts beer lovers from throughout Western New York.

Ballyhoo

The perfect blend of old-school and new-school Ballyhoo is known for house-made sausages, fresh cocktails made with pressed juices and the biggest ice cream sandwich you’ll ever see.

Undergrounds

A cafe in a former funeral home, hence the name, Undergrounds is known for great coffee and some of the quirkiest breakfast sandwiches around.
