Building Buffalo

This new exhibit at the library’s Central branch: Buildings From Books, Books From Buildings, focuses on an outstanding collection of rare and exquisitely illustrated books encompassing the history of architecture and landscape design from the late 15th through mid-20th Century. These served as an educational resource and inspiration for generations of architects who created the built treasures Buffalo celebrates today. These are, in short, the books that helped build buildings.

Buffalo Never Fails: The Queen City and World War I

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I in 1917, this exhibit looks back to a critical time in our nation’s history, emphasizing Buffalo’s role in the war. Central to this exhibition is the Library’s extraordinary collection of World War I posters, representing some of the finest graphically designed war propaganda from the United States, Canada and Europe.

Picturing Niagara

The beauty and power of Niagara Falls has come to symbolize the country’s distinct natural heritage. Many artists made pilgrimages to the site in an attempt to capture its awe-inspiring majesty.  In this exhibition, artist Stephen Hannock’s recent gift to the Albright-Knox, The Great Falls at Dawn for Xu Bing, will be joined by additional historical and contemporary interpretations of the natural wonder drawn from the museum’s permanent collection.

Light, Line, Color and Space

This exhibition celebrates the past five years of new acquisitions from among hundreds of recently acquired gifts to the permanent collection. “This compelling exhibition is an exciting look inward into the permanent collection of the UB Art Galleries. Many of these works are on view for the first time and we hope the UB community as well as Buffalo area residents will enjoy the plethora of artwork that makes up Light, Line, Color, and Space.”

We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women 1965-85

Focusing on the work of black women artists, this exhibit examines the political, social, cultural, and aesthetic priorities of women of color.  It’s the first exhibition to highlight their voices and experiences, in order to reorient conversations around race, feminism, political action, art production, and art history during this significant period. The exhibition features a wide array of work by a diverse group who lived at the intersections of avant-garde art worlds and radical political movements.
