The Juneteenth Festival (a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States) of Buffalo began in 1976 as a culturally relevant alternative to the country’s Bicentennial Celebration. Murals were painted, and vendors set up booths to sell ethnic foods and wares entertainment and festivity were abundant. The event has grown tremendously, with the mission to actively preserve and promote the broad spectrum of African American heritage through educational and cultural activities that will benefit the community as a whole.

Juneteenth of Buffalo is approaching a major milestone: a half-century of celebrating freedom, resilience, and the rich cultural heritage of Buffalo’s Black community. This summer, the Juneteenth 50th Anniversary Committee will pay tribute to this milestone by kicking off a historic 50-year celebration scheduled to run through June 2026.

The 50th annual Juneteenth Parade will be held on Saturday, June 14th. The parade begins at Genesee Street & Ivey Street at 10:00 AM.
