Exhibit: Creative Journeys
The Buffalo History Museum will host a new exhibit by Stitch Buffalo, “Creative Journeys: Celebrating the Art of Refugee Women in Western New York”. Since 2014, Stitch Buffalo (501c3) has provided a welcoming space for refugee and immigrant women to connect, express themselves and their culture, and gain economic empowerment through their creativity in the textile arts. Stitch offers recently resettled refugee women the opportunity to hone their skills in stitching and embroidery through ongoing classes and sell their work at a storefront at 1215 Niagara St.
“Creative Journeys” is a celebration of their work and the traditional art forms these women carried with them from Bhutan, Burma, Nepal, Thailand, Egypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Somalia, and beyond. Throughout the exhibit, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the cultural contexts that produced these works and learn about the individual women whose aesthetics and lived experiences are reflected within them.
Creative Journeys will remain on display at The Buffalo History Museum during normal museum hours (Wednesday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Thursday-Saturday 10 a.m. & 5 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m. & 5 p.m.).
