Exhibit: Bird by Bird

Art Dialogue Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of fiber artworks by Western New York Artist Marie Hassett. The exhibition highlights a selection of mixed media fiber art works by this important regional artist. The exhibit was curated by gallery director, Donald J. Siuta.

Artists Statement about her work: The birds represented in these works are both reminders of what has been lost and what is at risk of disappearing in the natural world.  I explore the complexities of our relationship to nature and the consequences of loss in its finality.  The species shown here are extinct or have been threatened with extinction due primarily to human actions.

I work with various fibers and found objects, using repetitive stitching & not unlike the repetitive activity of nest building & to give form and detail to each piece.  The hand stitching with silk and cotton thread and floss creates hues and shading giving depth and detail to each piece. Kimono remnants, various fabrics, papers and found objects are combined and stitched to form each collage.

My work has been featured in national and regional shows, museums and cultural centers, as well as in private and public collections.
