Buffalo Arts Studio is proud to present David Buck: “Recollect,” the first-ever retrospective exhibition of Western New York-based painter David Buck. The exhibition will be on view from June 27 through August 8, 2025, with an opening reception on Friday, June 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. as part of M&T Bank’s Fourth Friday at Buffalo Arts Studio series. The event is free and open to the public.
“Recollect” brings together more than 60 oil paintings created over the past two decades, offering an intimate view into Buck’s lifelong exploration of memory, identity, and family history. The exhibition includes works from private collections many of which have never before been exhibited along with two new large-scale paintings created specifically for this show.
“I’m thrilled to have this exhibition happen right here where all the work was created,” said Buck. “‘Recollect’ refers to the process of gathering past works, as well as the core of my work all along reinterpreting photographic images through the distortion of memory and the immediacy of the brush.”
Buck’s expressive, layered style transforms vintage family photographs into emotive compositions that reflect the complexities of memory and time. Using a wide range of brushstrokes, he “captures the emotion of fleeting moments,” drawing viewers into personal yet universally resonant scenes.
David Buck is a painter who lives and works in Western New York. His artistic practice evolved alongside a successful career in illustration, design, and advertising. Buck has exhibited regionally, including shows at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Kenan Center, Studio Hart Gallery, and The Distillery in Pittsburgh. He has a longstanding relationship with Buffalo Arts Studio, serving on the Board of Directors before becoming a Studio Artist in 2006. “Recollect” marks Buck’s first solo exhibition in the Buffalo Arts Studio galleries.
