Series of amateur hockey tournaments generate millions for the local economy
BUFFALO, N.Y. – March 8, 2018 – The Buffalo Niagara region continues to be a go-to destination for hockey championship events. This year is the sixth straight that Amherst Youth Hockey and the Northtown Center at Amherst have partnered together to host the New York State Amateur Hockey Association’s State Tournaments. The two venues are also welcoming back a USA Hockey National Championship April 5-8. The Northtown Center at Amherst, a premier four sheet hockey arena, will be the tournament hub for each of the four championship weekends. Cornerstone Arena in Lockport, NY and Hyde Park Ice Pavilion in Niagara Falls, NY will support the tournament this year by providing an additional three sheets of ice to host the NYSAHA State Tournament weekends.
Amherst Youth Hockey, The Northtown Center at Amherst, Cornerstone Arena, Hyde Park Ice Pavilion and the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission’s collective partnership will welcome over 204 teams from across the state this month to compete for these championship titles. Collectively, these 22 division tournaments are slated to fill over 10,000 hotel room nights and bring in approximately $7.9 million for the local economy within a four-week period.
The 2018 tournaments are as follows:
– March 9-11 will kick off the state tournaments with a total of 52 teams from New York State. These teams are made up of the girls tier I 12U, 14U, 16U and 19U divisions and girls tier II 12U, 14U, 16U and 19U divisions. Competition will be hosted at the Northtown Center at Amherst, Cornerstone Arena and the Hyde Park Ice Pavilion.
– March 16-18 will feature 52 total teams from New York State. This tournament includes boys tier I and II 14U, 16U and 18U teams, and boys tier I 15U. Competition will be hosted at the Northtown Center at Amherst, Cornerstone Arena and the Hyde Park Ice Pavilion. Winners of boys tier I 14U will advance to Charlotte, NC; 15U to Plymouth, MA; 16U to Philadelphia, PA and 18U will advance to Marlborough, MA. Boys tier II 14U will advance to Amherst, NY, 16U to Wayne, NJ and 18U to Green Bay, WI.
