Mamma Mia at Shea’s Performing Arts CenterAlready home to 14 professional theaters, Buffalo’s reputation as an emerging national center for the arts continues to grow. With so many diverse performance Buffalo theater has something for everyone. You’ll find Broadway musicals at Shea’s Performing Arts Center, a European-style opera house of real grandeur in the heart of the city’s downtown; the greatest works of dramatic literature at the Irish Classical Theatre Company; pieces by African-Americans and people of color at Ujima Theatre; work by up-and-coming and undiscovered playwrights at Alleyway Theatre; and eclectic menu of musicals, comedies and drama at the lovely and intimate Kavinoky Theatre on the campus of D’Youville College; and entertainment for young audiences at Theatre of Youth in the beautifully-restored Allendale Theatre in historic Allentown.

In summertime, Shakespeare in Delaware Park is the second largest outdoor Shakespeare festival in the country. Nestled in the natural amphitheater that has come to be known as "Shakespeare Hill," a grand Tudor-style stage is constructed each summer as the home for Shakepeare’s stories of passion, laughter and love.

Buffalo Philharmonic OrchestraThe Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Buffalo Chamber Music Society are both at home in the acoustic and architectural perfection of the internationally-acclaimed Kleinhans Music Hall. The BPO’s summer home at Artpark in nearby Lewiston overlooks the magnificent Niagara Gorge, where a series of concerts and plays - from Broadway to bluegrass and the blues - is held between June and September.

HSBC Arena on the city’s waterfront regularly reverberates when the monsters of rock come to town. The University at Buffalo’s Center for the Arts in suburban Amherst also hosts a full schedule of concerts, dance performances and lectures.

ALLEYWAY THEATRE

Founded in 1980 by Executive Director Neal Radice, Alleyway Theatre is Western New York's only company dedicated to the development and production of new plays and musicals. The season runs from September to May during which time the company presents four to five premiere works, educational workshops, the annual Maxim Mazumdar New Play Competition, the annual production of Buffalo Quickies (a festival of one-act plays), and our annual holiday presentation of A Christmas Carol. ARTPARK

Artpark is a picturesque 150 acre performing and visual arts park along the historic Niagara River Gorge on land rich in both Native American history, pioneer and early American history. Artpark includes several archeological sites, including a Hopewell Mound from one of the earliest Native American mound building cultures and the remnants of the much more recent Oak Hill Mansion. Artpark is also a National Wildlife Federation Backyard Wildlife Habitat, National Audubon Society birding site (along the Niagara River Corridor), and a popular destination for hiking, picnics, and fishing . BABEVILLE

Buffalo's already vibrant theater and performing arts scene received an infusion of new energy in 2006 when Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records opened a state-of-the-art performance space in the former Asbury Delaware Church. Re-christened The Church (and now known as Babeville), this remarkable adaptive re-use of a Buffalo landmark dating from 1871 plays host to an eclectic array of performers and styles and provides another anchor to the city's burgeoning entertainment district. Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center shares the space and continues its tradition of presenting exhibits, film screenings and musical performances by the most adventurous and provocative artists working today.

BUFFALO CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY

BUFFALO GATEWAY CHORUS

The Buffalo Gateway Chorus is an award-winning chapter of Sweet Adelines International. The chorus membership ranges in age from 20 to 90 years young, and the 80 members travel from within Western New York, northwestern Pennsylvania and Ontario to take part in our celebration of song. Their music is sung in four-part acapella harmony in the barbershop style. Their repertoire includes show tunes and modern music as well as some favorites from the past. The chorus has performed at a wide variety of area venues including the Chautauqua Institution, summer concerts at town parks and they hold an annual Fall Show and Winter Cabaret. Buffalo Gateway Show Chorus is currently ranked as the sixth highest scoring contest in the world among Sweet Adeline International choruses and will compete in Hawaii in November 2008 at the annual international competition.

COLORED MUSICIANS CLUB

PAUL ROBESON THEATRE AT THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER

The Paul Robeson Theatre at the African American Cultural Center is the oldest African American theater in Western New York. It was founded to nurture and showcase the artistic talents of African American playwrights, producers, directors, actors and stage technicians. In keeping with that mission, the PRT utilizes local performers in its productions, and commissions Buffalo and out-of-town artists to direct many of its plays. In addition to its stage component, the PRT consists of the Paul Robeson Adult and Children's Drama Workshop, and the Paul Robeson Technical Theatre Workshop. Both serve as a training ground for aspiring Buffalo area actors and actresses. The 130-seat Paul Robeson Theatre is housed in the African American Cultural Center. The season generally runs from September to June, with productions that focus on the African American experience. Also at the African American Cultural Center is the AACC Dance & Drum Performance Company, Inc., the first and oldest African American Dance Company in the City of Buffalo. It is fundamentally a repertory company that has focused on the celebration of cultural art and the institutionalization of African dance and music. Shaw Festival

The Shaw Festival is a world-renowned theatre company that has built its reputation on the committed, detailed exploration of both celebrated and rarely produced works by Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries, as well as on the virtuosity of its acting Ensemble and the excellence of its production values. In 2000, Shaw's mandate was expanded to include work written about the period of Shaw's lifetime (1856 - 1950). Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell, now in her fifth season, has expressed her commitment to explore the mandate in new ways, including producing international and Canadian contemporary plays, new translations of classic texts and new plays developed for the Festival. Ten productions are presented each season in three distinctive theatres: The Festival, Court House, and Royal George, all located in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake.
