Sports & Outdoor Recreation

From the tailgate parties at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday afternoons when the Bills are in town to the harness racing at Buffalo Raceway, Buffalo Niagara has got plenty of game for you. We invite you to chill out with one of the coolest teams on ice when the National Hockey League Sabres hit the rink at HSBC Arena each winter. Or you can check out the boys of summer when the Bisons, the Triple A affiliate of the New York Mets, play at the finest ballpark in the minor leagues – Coca-Cola Field.

If you’d rather get in on the action, Buffalo can provide plenty of excitement in the form of the some of the best skiing, fishing, birding and boating in the Northeast. Hire a charter boat for the day and bring home a super-sized smallmouth bass. Let Seven Seas Sailing show you a thing or two about our inland sea. Hit the slopes in nearby “ski country.” Or hike and bike your way around the spectacular Niagara Gorge.

Visit Buffalo Niagara and get in on the game.

Golf Courses

Golf in Buffalo Niagara has entered a golden age with the recent construction of a number of high end courses on both sides of the Niagara River. Among the new stand-out American tracks are Arrowhead, the Links at Ivy Ridge, Diamond Hawk, and Harvest Hill. Their Canadian counterparts include: Legends on the Niagara, John Daly’s Thundering Waters, Royal Niagara, and Lochness Links at Hunters Pointe.

While each offers golfers a serious test, one track stands out for its outstanding design, scenic beauty and reasonable rates. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, the late dean of American golf course architects, Glen Oak is a challenging test of golf as it meanders through the ponds and streams of East Amherst. Water comes into play on many holes and course management skills are what matter most here - not a big driver off the tee. The course has a number of memorable holes, perhaps none more so than the 18th - one of the finest closing holes anywhere. Golf doesn't have to be a good walk spoiled and Glen Oak proves it. For more information call (716) 688-5454.

Skiing & Snowmobiling

The Buffalo Niagara Region is home to some of the finest skiing in the Northeast. In fact, Buffalo's reputation for the white stuff is largely the result of precipitation received in the "snowbelt" south of the city.

In nearby Colden, the 700-acre resort at Kissing Bridge receives an annual average snowfall of 180 inches. With 36 snow-covered slopes that measure a full 1.25 miles wide, KB is a short 45-minute drive from the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

Further south into ski country, you'll find the charming village of Ellicottville. Visitors from New York State, Ontario, Pennsylvania and Ohio flock to this resort town to sample the outstanding skiing at Holiday Valley, as well as the shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants the village has to offer. Ski Magazine recently ranked Holiday Valley among the top 15 ski resorts in the Eastern United States.

Nearby, nestled into the southwestern corner of New York State, 90 miles from Buffalo, you'll find the Peek 'n' Peak Resort and Conference Center. Peek 'n' Peak has 27 groomed slopes and trails serviced by eight chairlifts and two magic carpets. There are also miles of trails for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

Other nearby resorts include the family-oriented Buffalo Ski Club and Cockaigne located 18 miles from Lake Erie in Cherry Creek, New York. Cockaigne has a base elevation 1,100 feet higher than the lake and receives a prodigious 275 inches of snow in an average winter.

You'll also find numerous cross country ski trails in the region's parks, preserves and wilderness areas.

Think snow. Think Buffalo. Think skiing! Call (800) 367-9691 for up to the minute reports on ski conditions.
