DARIEN LAKE STATE PARK

Darien Lakes State Park's terrain is hilly with woodlands, ravines, streams and 12-acre Harlow Lake. Named in 2005 as one of Reserve America's Top Outdoor Locations and in 2004 as one of the Top 100 Campgrounds in the nation. Letchworth State Park, renowned as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern U.S. The Genesee River roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs--as high as 600 feet in some places--surrounded by lush forests. Hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails. Trails are also available for horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Letchworth offers nature, history and performing arts programs, guided walks and tours, a summer lecture series, whitewater rafting, kayaking, hot air ballooning and two pools for swimming. Winter activities include ice skating, snow tubing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and horse-drawn sleigh rides. The park is open year round. The camping area is open from mid-May to mid-October. Cabins may be rented year round. Deer and spring turkey hunting are permitted in season.

Golf Courses

Golf in Buffalo Niagara has entered a golden age with the recent construction of a number of high end courses on both sides of the Niagara River. Among the new stand-out American tracks are Arrowhead, the Links at Ivy Ridge, Diamond Hawk, and Harvest Hill. Their Canadian counterparts include: Legends on the Niagara, John Daly’s Thundering Waters, Royal Niagara, and Lochness Links at Hunters Pointe.

While each offers golfers a serious test, one track stands out for its outstanding design, scenic beauty and reasonable rates. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, the late dean of American golf course architects, Glen Oak is a challenging test of golf as it meanders through the ponds and streams of East Amherst. Water comes into play on many holes and course management skills are what matter most here - not a big driver off the tee. The course has a number of memorable holes, perhaps none more so than the 18th - one of the finest closing holes anywhere. Golf doesn't have to be a good walk spoiled and Glen Oak proves it. Available services range from 10 50 amp sites and 121 30 amp sites to 144 non-electric sites accommodating the biggest rig to the most primitive tent site. 21 prime sites, electric or non-electric, are located near the shores of Lake Ontario and offer spectacular panoramic views. The park has hiking trails for campers along the densely wooded bluffs. The marsh at the mouth of Four Mile Creek is home to fauna such as great blue herons, white tail deer and to flora such as stunning white trillium and greenbrier. A camp store is located at Four Mile Creek. Laundry facilities are located at comfort stations in the 100 and 200 areas. A modern playground is centrally located in the park. Seasonal.
