Celebrating the Arts & Crafts Movement
"The Connection 2008," is the 5th Annual Conference celebrating Western New York’s historic turn-of-the-20th century Arts & Crafts Trail. Held on the National Historic Landmark Roycroft Campus in East Aurora from October 24th-26th, this year’s theme of “Connect the dots” focuses on heritage in Western New York, but also brings attention to other Arts & Crafts sites and leaders from across the state and beyond.
The three day event will be a variety of lectures, activities and demonstrations. This year’s keynote speaker is Bruce Johnson who will present “Gustav Stickley and Elbert Hubbard: The Men and Their Myths” on Friday evening. Johnson is famous in Arts & Crafts circles as the founder/director of the 22-year-old Arts & Crafts Conference at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC.
Saturday’s program includes several speakers from different organizations including the 4-H Club and Frank Lloyd Wright scholars. Douglas Swift, President of the Roycroft Campus Corporation, whose expertise as a developer has saved the Larkin Shipping building in Buffalo will present a Roycroft Campus restoration update. Doug has studied the history of the Larkin Company’s connection to both Frank Lloyd Wright and The Roycroft Movement. He will share his research and illustrate the relationships. The afternoon will consist of artisan demonstrations, museums tours, book discussions and an appraisal fair. The night will conclude with a seven-course gourmet meal of local produce, paired with New York State wines.
Sunday morning continues with additional lectures, brunch and optional tours of
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin Martin House Complex, The Graycliff Conservancy, Arden Farm, or the Fournier House. This year the Connection Conference has teamed with Elderhostel International to offer a program that includes the conference plus an extended visit to experience Western New York’s cultural sites. All Elderhostel accommodations are at The Roycroft Inn. Call 1-800-454-5768 or go to www.elderhostel.org - Program # 11809 for more details.
