The Art of Illusion

Op Art Revisited at Albright-Knox Art Gallery Op Art Revisited recently opened at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.  A visual display of parallel lines, concentric circles and electric colors, the exhibition features manipulated depth, perspective, space and color to create an “optical illusion.”

Comprised entirely of works acquired by the Albright-Knox over the past 50 years, the exhibition includes 43 paintings and sculptures from artists central to the Op Art or Optical Art movement, such as Josef Albers, Richard Anuskiewicz, Bridget Riley, Julian Stanczak, and Victor Vasarely.  A majority of these works were also acquired by the Gallery shortly after their creation, an example of the Gallery’s tradition of buying artwork “while the paint was still wet.”  The Op Art movement began in the 1950s and reached its peak a decade later, with its eye-dazzling images becoming the visual iconography of the 1960s.  Works spanning all decades are represented in this collection.

Op Art Revisted can be viewed at the Gallery through January 25, 2009.  The Albright-Knox is Buffalo’s premier art gallery, home to leading collections of modern and contemporary works.  The Gallery also recently announced that it will remain open until 10 p.m. on Thursdays.  For more information, visit www.albrightknox.org
