Con Gusto!
The Albright Knox Art Gallery is set to open two new exhibits highlighting modern art and color this spring and will also offer many exciting Friday programs and special events, from storytelling to live music to family fun.
REMIX Recent Acquisitions recently opened in the gallery. The exhibit explores the new works recently brought into the collection and explains the motivation and excitement surrounding each acquisition. The works are done in a variety of mediums, including photography and installation and several works are on view to the public for the first time since they entered the collection. In conjunction with this exhibit, REMIX Recent Acquisitions of Works on Paper will open Friday, April 25th and showcase drawings, prints and watercolors reflecting contemporary art and artists.
As part of the Gusto at the Gallery series, on Friday, May 2nd, the finals of the Nickel City Poetry Slam will take place. Twelve of the best Buffalo performance poets will compete in verbal battles for one of the four spots on Buffalo’s own Poetry Slam Team and a chance to be sent to the National Poetry Slam. Also this evening, meet local archaeologists and hear about archaeological projects happening right here in WNY. Come learn how to excavate and even see artifacts from Old Fort Niagara!
The following Friday, May 9th, is family day. This night will feature Native American storytelling from the award-winning author and member of the Choctaw Nation, Tim Tingle. Tingle’s folklore stories feature many aspects of the Native American culture including rattles, drums, flutes and hymns sung in the Choctaw language. This same night, celebrate Mamapalooza, a program featuring mother musicians, artists, authors and dancers.
Join the Albright Knox for a concert on May 16th featuring top Brazilian composer and pianist Luiz Simas. Simas will perform a variety of genres from choro (a Brazilian ragtime) to Brazilian Pop and Jazz. And learn about Greece on May 30th with a night of Greek dancing, music, food and a lecture featuring the Greatest Hits of Greek Art.
