Not your father’s history museum

John and Mary and the Valkyries

The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society has recently announced many exciting events for this spring. From family activities to live music and special exhibits, it’s a busy season for the historical society and one that you’re sure to enjoy!

Saturday, May 3rd is the opening celebration for “Shaking Hands and Kissing Babies,” an exhibit looking at the evolution of presidential campaigns.  From 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., enjoy docent-led tours of the exhibit, a stilt-walking Uncle Sam, music, food and family activities. 

Come back the next day for “Music for a Sunday Afternoon: Stephen Baker on the Pan-Am Steinway Grand” on Sunday, May 4th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Accomplished pianist Stephen Baker will perform a program titled “The Great Songwriters,” with selections ranging from Harold Arlen to George Gershwin. He will make a return engagement on Sunday, June 1st to perform a program titled “Broadway & Beyond,” with selections ranging from Rogers & Hammerstein to Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Enjoy a relaxing evening overlooking Mirror Lake and the Japanese Garden on the veranda of the Historical Society with “Party on the Portico” from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, May 16th. John and Mary and the Valkyries (former 10,000 Maniacs members John Lombardo and Mary Ramsey) will perform during this night also featuring live music, beer, wine, hors d’oeuvres and free tours of the museum.
