Lights, Motion and Sound
Artist Jennifer Steinkamp’s video installations will come to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery beginning March 14th.
February 21, 2008 - On display at the renowned Albright-Knox Art Gallery March 14th-June 29th is a dramatic three-dimensional installation from Los Angeles based artist Jennifer Steinkamp. Melding aspects of computer animation, abstract painting, film architectural space and motion, this exhibit offers a comprehensive view of one the most important and prolific video and new media artists of our time.
Described as a “blowout extravaganza,” Steinkamp’s work dominates the space it confines and controls the area it overtakes. She rebels against spatial restrictions and eliminates existing boundaries between the object and its viewer. Her work allows one to become completely immersed within the eight stunning installations exhibited.
Through the use of light, motion and sound, Steinkamp manipulates images of nature with use of technology — though she never loses her original aesthetic effect, likening her computer to “the equivalent of paint, palette and brushes.” In Eye Catching, a hyper-realistic tree with revolving branches comes forth, inspired by the mythical Medusa and snakes.
Two of Steinkamp’s works are currently part of the Albright-Knox’s permanent collection. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is Buffalo’s premiere art showplace. The Gallery is open Wednesday-Sunday, with free admission from 3pm-10pm on Fridays (there is a $10 admission fee to the Steinkamp exhibition on Fridays).
