Rarely Seen—Until Wright Now
The Gardener’s Cottage is now open for public viewing at the Darwin Martin House.
January 24, 2008 - The Gardener’s Cottage is now open for public viewing at the historic Darwin Martin House Complex, designed by world-famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Designed for the Martin family’s gardener in 1905 as part of the overall estate plan, it wasn’t constructed until 1909. The cottage was the sixth building built on the complex, which earns the distinction of having more structures than any other site in the architect’s immense portfolio. The cottage was a private residence until 2006 and is in pristine condition due to comprehensive restoration in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. This rarely-seen building is now part of the complex’s In-Depth and Focus Tours.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Martin House for his longtime friend and loyal patron Darwin D. Martin. The Martin House Complex is located on Jewett Parkway, adjacent to Buffalo’s Olmsted-designed Delaware Park. After Martin’s death the house was abandoned and suffered significant damage until 1992, when the Martin House Restoration Corporation (MHRC) was formed to lead and oversee the landmark’s restoration. Currently undergoing restoration, the Darwin Martin House is considered to be the finest example of Wright’s “Prairie House” style.
