For the History Buff
THEODORE ROOSEVELT INAUGURAL SITE video courtesy WNED |
The past has a bright future in Buffalo if the newly expanded and restored Theodore Roosevelt National Historic Site is any indication. The site where Roosevelt took the oath of office as the nation's 26th President following the assassination of William McKinley has become a state-of-the-art heritage tourism destination, transporting visitors to September 1901 as witnesses to events that changed the world.

Everywhere you turn heritage sites are being restored and readied for visitors. You can experience Buffalo's role as the "Gateway to the West" at the newly revived Erie Canal Harbor. A series of walks, talks and tours and the Great Lakes sailing schooner, Spirit of Buffalo, have brought the historic terminus of the Erie Canal back to life. You can also re-live Buffalo's role as one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad and a pivotal site in the struggle for human rights at the Nash House Museum, or on a Motherland Connextions tour of the Michigan Street Baptist Church.
The city's origins as a thriving transportation and industrial center are on display at the Buffalo Transportation/Pierce-Arrow Museum, the Lower Lakes Marine Historical Society and the Ira G. Ross Aerospace Museum.
The Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society displays everything from artifacts from the Pan-American Exposition to souvenirs from the Buffalo Bills' 50 years as a National Football League franchise.

Other experiences await you. Step back in time to the War of 1812 on the battlements of Old Fort Niagara; experience 19th Century life on the Niagara Frontier at the Amherst Museum; travel "15 miles on the Erie Canal" with Lockport Locks and Erie Canal Cruises; tour the Civil War graves at beautiful Forest Lawn Cemetery; sample a real slice of Americana at the Colored Musicians Club where jazz legends jammed; and visit the Millard Fillmore House in historic East Aurora. And be sure to take the kids to the Naval & Military Park, the country's largest inland floating history museum. Literature lovers will also want to make their way to our two Karpeles Manuscript Museums and the Mark Twain Room at the Central Library, where the original manuscript of Huckleberry Finn is housed .

And for visitors who want to get off the beaten path and explore the nooks and crannies of Buffalo's ethnic neighborhoods, historic taverns and "Nickel City" oddities, step aboard a Forgotten Buffalo Tour. It's history at its most entertaining!

OUR LADY OF VICTORY BASILICA AND NATIONAL SHRINE (1926)
| Map it | What's around
Architect: Emilie Ulrich
Boasting some of Western New York's most exquisite architecture, the Basilica of Our Lady of Victory stands as a gift of thanks to the Blessed Mother from Father Nelson Baker, who is currently a candidate for sainthood and whose final resting place is located within the church at the Lourdes Grotto. Prominent features of the shrine include its great dome, main altar and stations of the cross, as well as a new museum in the lower level dedicated to the life and legacy of Father Baker. Public guided tour offered Sundays at 1 pm. Private tours offered by reservation.
Recently a space in the Basilica's basement was renovated to enhance the museum honoring Father Baker. The space includes 3,700 square feet of pure museum-style displays. This project is viewed as a key step for a spike in visitors that would likely follow if Baker is someday canonized as a saint. The museum reflects the many charitable works of Father Baker and tells the story in an imaginative and informative way.
The OLV Basilica is open free-of-charge to visitors of
all faiths daily from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. The Gift Shop, located in the Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
