Buffalo was the quintessential 19th century boomtown. Its position at the western end of the Erie Canal made it the Gateway to the West - the departure point for immigrants on their way to the heartland. You can experience this history at the newly revived and restored Erie Canal Harbor. Buffalo was also one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad, a beacon for runaway slaves seeking freedom on the far side of the Niagara River. Battles were fought here, the city put to the torch by British loyalists during the War of 1812. Fortunes were made here by the likes of a young William G. Fargo, founder of American Express and Wells Fargo. Buffalo even sent two of its sons - Millard Fillmore and Grover Cleveland - to Washington as Presidents.

Today, you can step back in time to the War of 1812 on the battlements of Old Fort Niagara; experience 19th Century life on the Niagara Frontier at the Amherst Museum; travel "15 miles on the Erie Canal" with the help of Lockport Locks and Erie Canal Cruises; tour the Civil War graves at beautiful Forest Lawn Cemetery; explore Buffalo's pivotal role in America's rise to industrial preeminence at the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society; or sample a real slice of Americana at the Colored Musicians Club where jazz legends like Louis Armstrong jammed. Presidential history buffs can even stand where Teddy Roosevelt stood when he took the oath office following the assassination of William McKinley at the recently restored and expanded Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site or visit the Millard Fillmore House in historic East Aurora. And the kids are sure to love the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park, the country's largest inland floating history museum.

Learn about the dramatic and heart-rending stories of the people who risked their lives for freedom and human rights at Freedom Crossing, the new Underground Railroad Interpretive Center at Niagara University, and the Nash House Museum in Buffalo’s Michigan Avenue Heritage Corridor.

Buffalo is also home to two of nine Karpeles Manuscript Library Museums found throughout the United States. Together they house the largest private collection of historic manuscripts in the world.

History buffs will also be taken with the antique cars at the Buffalo Transportation/Pierce-Arrow Museum and the rich aviation history to be found at the Ira G. Ross Aerospace Museum, recently relocated to HSBC Arena in downtown Buffalo.

ARTPARK

Artpark is a picturesque 150 acre performing and visual arts park along the historic Niagara River Gorge on land rich in both Native American history, pioneer and early American history. Artpark includes several archeological sites, including a Hopewell Mound from one of the earliest Native American mound building cultures and the remnants of the much more recent Oak Hill Mansion. Artpark is also a National Wildlife Federation Backyard Wildlife Habitat, National Audubon Society birding site (along the Niagara River Corridor), and a popular destination for hiking, picnics, and fishing . BUFFALO FIRE DEPARTMENT'S HISTORIC FIREBOAT

A National Historic Landmark, the E. M. Cotter, Buffalo's Fireboat, is the oldest active fireboat in the world. It was built in Elizabeth, New Jersey and arrived in Buffalo November 6, 1900. Built and commissioned during an era when Buffalo's waterfront and port were booming, the Cotter has been an invaluable asset of fire protection for the numerous warehouses, grain elevators and other facilities that line Buffalo's shores. After 105 years the Cotter continues serving the citizens and properties of Greater Buffalo, more as a floating museum, visiting ports on Lakes Erie and Ontario.

COLORED MUSICIANS CLUB

The Colored Musicians Club is the only remaining African American club of its kind in the United States. In 1999, it was designated a historical preservation site. Currently, the Club is promoting historical research and the preservation of jazz in Buffalo. Members offer free jazz lessons to community youth, and hold a jam session at the club on Sunday evenings.

ERIE CANAL HARBOR

Learn about Buffalo's roots and experience a self-guided walking tour of the recently restored Erie Canal Harbor area! FOREST LAWN CEMETERY AND GARDEN MAUSOLEUM

Lt. Col. Matt Urban Memorial

The enemy nicknamed Lt. Col. Matt Urban "The Ghost" during World War II because although they wounded him, they could never kill him. He led his troops through six campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Belgium, France and Germany. The Guinness Book of World Records lists Urban as "the Most Combat-Decorated Soldier in American History." Urban's medal collection is extensive (29 medals for bravery) and includes seven purple hearts. On July 19, 1980, then President Jimmy Carter presented him his long awaited Medal of Honor, and in March, 1995 Lt. Colonel Matt Urban was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A monument honoring Urban, who grew up on Buffalo's east side was recently erected in front of the Erie County Rath Building in downtown Buffalo.

BUFFALO MUSEUM OF SCIENCE

Dedicated to the study and interpretation of the natural and physical sciences, the Buffalo Museum of Science's extensive collections and artifacts represent all facets of the natural world with an emphasis on Western New York as well as man-made objects spanning the globe. ERIE CANAL DISCOVERY CENTER

A new state-of-the-art interpretive center for the Erie Canal, focusing on the role that Lockport played in canal history, and featuring a 20' x 13' Raphael Beck mural, "The Opening of the Erie Canal, October 26, 1825." This beautiful floor to ceiling mural depicts the celebration surrounding then NY Governor Dewitt Clinton's ceremonial first passage through the now famous "Flight of Five" locks at Lockport to officially open the Erie Canal. Individuals from the painting "come to life" with the assistance of virtual-reality, through computer kiosks in the Center. A multidimensional orientation film transports the visitor back in time onboard a recreation of the packet boat Western Comet. Additional audiovisual stations such as the "Hard Rock Canal" and "Work the Lock" allow guests the hands-on opportunity to view the dolomite rock wall at Lockport and to navigate a model ship through an actual working series of locks. The life and times of "canawlers," people who lived and worked on the canal, as well as "canal kids," are depicted in exhibits that feature the latest technology in communication "sound-sticks." The National Park Service rounds out the many displays with their own description of the National Heritage Corridor.

FREEDOM CROSSING: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD IN GREATER NIAGARA

The dramatic and heart-rending stories of the people who risked their lives for freedom, as well as the lasting heritage of their ancestors, can now be experienced at Freedom Crossing, the new Regional Underground Railroad Interpretive Center, on the campus of Niagara University in nearby Lewiston. Freedom crossing tells the story of the Underground Railroad in Buffalo Niagara through historic photographs, artifacts, stories, audio stations, and art. GENESEE COUNTRY VILLAGE AND MUSEUM

Genesee Country Village & Museum is one of the largest living history museums in the nation. The museum is uniquely situated between Rochester and Buffalo in the beautiful hamlet of Mumford, New York. Stroll through the 19th century Historic Village and meet the costumed interpreters that help bring the 1800s to life and be certain to visit the John L. Wehle Art Gallery May through October. HERSCHELL CARROUSEL FACTORY MUSEUM

Ira G. Ross Aerospace Museum

The Aerospace Museum is one of three cultural/tourist attractions clustered at Buffalo's developing waterfront and is located in HSBC Arena, behind the Sabres Store with the its entrance on Seymour Knox III Plaza, at the foot of Main Street. The museum tells the story of Western New York's unique aviation and aerospace heritage through the acquisition, preservation and display of aviation artifacts. The museum will be open Saturdays and Sundays (and for Memorial Day on Monday, May 25) from 11 AM-4 PM. Beginning June 17 through Labor Day, the Museum will be open Wednesdays-Sundays, 11 AM-4 PM.

LANGSTON HUGHES INSTITUTE

The Langston Hughes Institute Center for Cultural History and Arts Education is a non-profit organization that has been a catalyst for the development, preservation and promotion of African American heritage in the City of Buffalo since 1968. LOWER LAKES MARINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM

The museum - the former Howard H. Baker Company's ship chandlery built in 1830 - houses an extensive collection of maritime history relating to the creation of the Erie Canal. Photos, newspaper articles, model ships and wartime vessels are included in the displays of the 130-year history of boat building in Buffalo. NASH HOUSE

The former residence of the Rev. J. Edward Nash, the pastor of the Michigan Avenue Baptist Church. Many of Rev. Nash's sermons and letters that are a crucial part of Buffalo's African-American community history were written here and are on display for viewing. Open tours by appointment.
