BUFFALO'S ARCHITECTURAL TREASURES video

Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin Martin House Complex came into its own as a tourist destination with the opening in 2009 of architect Toshiko Mori's Greatbatch Pavilion. This 8,000 square foot interpretive center eloquently tells the story of Buffalo businessman Darwin D. Martin and the young man from Chicago who would go on to become the greatest architect of the 20th Century.

The Greatbatch Pavilion is the perfect place to start your tour of Buffalo's wealth of great American buildings. Here you'll be introduced to the breadth and depth of Wright's work in Buffalo, including the Martin's country home at Graycliff, the Rowing Boathouse and Blue Sky Mausoleum. You can also acquaint yourself with Buffalo's other landmarks through a large screen, interactive Google map.

From the Martin House, step into the tree-filled Parkside neighborhood and amble into the bucolic splendor of nearby Delaware Park, both designed by the father of American landscape architects, Frederick Law Olmsted.

From Delaware Park, make your way to H.H. Richardson's Buffalo State Hospital, known today as the Richardson-Olmsted Complex, a towering Romanesque monument that dominates the skyline of the city's West Side. This National Historic Landmark features grounds by Olmsted and is in the midst of a multi-year restoration.

Click Here for more information on Buffalo ArchitectureMake your way down Richmond Avenue to Symphony Circle and Kleinhans Music Hall, home of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Kleinhans is a modernist masterpiece known for its sleek contours, elegant wood interior and extraordinary acoustics.

In downtown Buffalo you'll find Louis Sullivan's groundbreaking Guaranty Building and Daniel Burnham's breathtakingly beautiful Ellicott Square Building. In nearby East Aurora, visit Elbert Hubbard's Roycroft Campus, one of the centers of the American Arts & Crafts Movement. Today, the Roycroft Inn has been returned to its former glory and the surrounding campus is undergoing a similar restoration.

Be sure to stop by the stunning Lord & Burnham conservatory at the Botanical Gardens in Olmsted's South Park. Also not to be missed are the massive grain elevators along the banks of the Buffalo River. You'll be amazed by the scale of these towering monoliths that influenced the course of modern architecture.

Come to Buffalo and see the city that The New York Times called "home to some of the greatest American architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries."

Buffalo Central Terminal

 | Map it  | What's around

The Buffalo Central Terminal opened to the public on June 22, 1929. Built by the New York Central Railroad and designed by architects Alfred T. Fellheimer & Steward Wagner, the Art Deco style station was built to accommodate up to 3200 passengers per hour, or 200 trains per day. The complex consists of the main concourse, a 17 story office tower, a four story baggage building and two story mail building along Curtiss Street, and the now detached train concourse. The complex sits on a 17 acre site 2.5 miles east of downtown Buffalo. The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) was founded in 1997 to oversee the stabilization and restoration of the Central Terminal. Local preservationist Scott Field acquired the 18-acre site, including concourse, tower, and four story baggage building along Curtiss Street, from Samuel Tuchman and B.C.T Inc. for $1 plus the assumption of back taxes owed to the City of Buffalo. Buffalo Central Terminal reopened to the public in 2003 with a series of tours and open houses. Since then the tours continue, as well as a number of other fun events all summer long such as Dyngus Day, wine and beer festivals, art shows, car shows, train shows, and the annual Oktoberfest. The Terminal has seen over 125,000 visitors since reopening.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S ROWING BOATHOUSE

 | Map it  | What's around

In 1910, at the age of 43, Frank Lloyd Wright traveled to Europe to present what would become his most beloved collection of structure illustrations: the Wasmuth Portfolio. One of these famous drawings was something Wright called "Boathouse for the University of Wisconsin Boat Club." Twenty years later, the architect included this same boathouse in an international exhibition of six of his greatest works. The boathouse idea was obviously a favorite of Wright's, featuring design elements seen in other local treasures like the Martin House and the Larkin Building - large vertical piers supporting horizontal planes. Sadly, it was never constructed. It was one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most significant projects that had never come to fruition - until now. Completed in 2007, the Rowing Boathouse is open to the public for tours.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S GRAYCLIFF

 | Map it  | What's around

Set high on a cliff with sweeping views over Lake Erie, Graycliff stands as an architectural jewel awaiting your discovery. Built between 1926 and 1929, the Graycliff estate was designed by the renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright for Isabelle R. Martin and her husband, Larkin Company executive Darwin D. Martin. Graycliff served as the Martin summer home from 1927 to the mid-1940s. It is a complex of three buildings that includes the small Heat Hut, the 3,100 square-foot Foster House and the 6,500 square-foot Isabelle R. Martin House, all set amidst eight and a half acres of rolling lawns and gardens also designed by Wright. Broadly cantilevered balconies open the buildings to the soft lake air. On the Isabelle R. Martin House, the second floor floats over a terrace and garden below. Another balcony soars, suspended above a sunken garden. Yet a third balcony overlooks the lake itself, and the spray of Niagara Falls in the far distance. Ribbons of glass windows and doors admit the lake breezes. They also frame views of the lake seen - ingeniously - directly through the house itself.
