Ethnic Foodways

Generations ago, thousands of immigrants came to Buffalo to help build New York State’s canal system and work in the city’s bustling industry. The first wave of workers to arrive was German, followed by Irish immigrants fleeing the famine. Shortly thereafter, people from Poland and Italy made their way to Buffalo. And with them came the food traditions and recipes of their homelands. So, plan to compare cannoli at the cafes along Hertel Avenue, stock up on pierogi at the Broadway Market and dig into a classic beef on weck at taverns around town.
