Buffalo’s beef on weck sandwich is in the national spotlight, thanks to this great feature in USA TODAY.
Great American Bites columnist Larry Olmsted profiled the city’s favorite sandwich in a lengthy feature detailing its history, taste and the best spots to buy one. Olmsted’s column specializes in stories about distinct, regional foods across America. And given how many articles about Buffalo sprang from his visit – including these features on Ted’s Hot Dogs, Bocce Club Pizza, and wings at Duff’s, Bar Bill and The Anchor Bar – he clearly liked what he tasted here.
Olmsted sampled the beef on weck from Charlie The Butcher, one of the longtime purveyors of the distinctly Buffalo creation, and praised the combination of carved beef, the salted hard roll with caraway seeds, and bite of the horseradish sauce on top.
“This is one of the most distinctive and enduring of America’s regional sandwiches and enjoys a high level of quality throughout the Buffalo region,” Olmsted wrote.
