Pollution Prevention for the
Hospitality Sector
The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning (DEP) and Buffalo State College are partnering on a year-long project called “Pollution Prevention (P2) for the Hospitality Sector.” Funding for this endeavor, which will provide pollution prevention assessments to the local hospitality industry, comes from a United States Environmental Protection Agency grant. Ten students majoring in Hospitality or Geography and Environmental Planning at Buffalo State College will receive training from Erie County DEP’s P2 staff members. The students will then work with DEP personnel on conducting assessments at 10 businesses in Erie and Niagara Counties. At the completion of the project in March of 2009, these 10 facilities will have received a written report on how they can apply pollution prevention strategies and identify the cost-savings associated with each measure. The project is projected to eliminate the generation of 1,760 tons of waste with an associated savings of $500,000.
