Though many people recognize Buffalo for its winter weather and lake effect snow, our summers are extraordinary. We love to eat outside, and enjoying an ice cream cone in the sun is a highlight. Local ice cream makers include the major corporation Perry’s and the smaller, artisanal manufacturer, Lake Effect Ice Cream; both companies specialize in offering customers unique flavors. Soft serve is especially popular and is served at many locations throughout the area, but most notably at Anderson’s. Custard, a soft serve made with real eggs, is an old-time classic, and the best example of it is made at Hibbard’s in Lewiston, NY, where the recipe and the ice cream machine are both nearly 100 years old.
If ice cream isn’t your cup of tea, but you still have the urge to taste a little of Buffalo's sweet side, take a trip to one of our many chocolatiers. Sponge candy, made of crispy, airy caramelized “sponge” and coated with high-quality milk or dark chocolate is a regional favorite. Some of the most popular makers of sponge candy include Ko-Ed Candies, Fowler’s, Alethea’s and Watson’s. Looking for something less traditional? Two newer confectioners are located within blocks of one another downtown, and both are open to the public. Choco-Logo makes chocolates for big department stores, and has a very unique line of truffles. Chow Chocolat is a European-style chocolatier and has a place in their downtown location for guests to sit and enjoy their elegant sweets while enjoying a cup of coffee.
