German
Our Germanic ancestors can be credited for our proud history of brewing, as well as our passion for something we call Beef on Weck. Though this beef and horseradish sandwich served on a special rock salt and caraway-encrusted roll (known as kimmelweck) is not an obvious descendent of a specific German recipe, the roll itself is attributed to Germany’s Black Forest. You can find this sandwich in restaurants, pubs and cafes all over Buffalo, but some of the most popular ‘weck eateries include Eckl’s, Charlie the Butcher and Schwabl’s. Bratwurst is another favorite, and classic German cuisine can be found in two area restaurants that have preserved their old-time aesthetic both on their menu and in their decor: Ulrich’s and Scharf’s.
